The map
Norwalk lies in southeast Los Angeles County, and from above it is a clean example of the Southern California suburban grid. Long arterial roads run north to south and east to west at regular intervals, and within each large square, residential streets form their own smaller patterns of rows, curves and short cul-de-sacs.
Two freeways shape the map. Interstate 5 cuts diagonally through the city, and Interstate 605 runs along the eastern side next to the concrete channel of the San Gabriel River. Their wide interchanges and ramps form some of the boldest lines on the poster.
Norwalk is the eastern terminus of the Metro C Line and has a Metrolink station on the rail line to Orange County, making it a transit link in the region. A Norwalk map poster shows the order of a postwar suburb, laid out block by block, with the freeways cutting through it.
Major streets divide the city into regular squares, each filled with its own small pattern of residential streets and schools.
Interstate 5 runs diagonally across the grid while the 605 follows the east side, creating large interchanges that stand out on the map.
The channelled river runs in a straight line along the eastern edge, beside the freeway, marking the city's boundary.
