The map
Nuwara Eliya lies high in the central hills of Sri Lanka, in a basin surrounded by tea-covered slopes. From above, the town gathers around a central park and a racecourse, while Lake Gregory stretches along its southern edge. Roads leave the town in winding lines, climbing and descending through the estates, and the peak of Pidurutalagala rises to the north.
Developed in the nineteenth century as a retreat for British planters and officials escaping the lowland heat, the town is often called Little England. Its colonial-era buildings, golf course, gardens and cool, misty climate still recall that past. The surrounding hills are among the best-known tea-growing areas in the country, and neat rows of tea bushes cover much of the landscape.
A Nuwara Eliya map poster shows the town's distinctive arrangement: open spaces at its heart, the lake to one side and roads curving away into the hills. In black and white the park, golf course and racecourse appear as broad pale areas, creating a calm composition that feels very different from the dense grid of lowland cities.
The reservoir along the southern edge of town forms a long, irregular shape on the map, one of the most recognisable features of the composition.
Victoria Park, the golf course and the racecourse leave wide open spaces in the centre, giving the map a light and airy structure.
Roads curve out through the surrounding estates, following valleys and ridges and drawing loose, flowing lines across the edges of the poster.
