Ambattur lies on the western side of Chennai and has been part of the Greater Chennai Corporation since 2011. Its map is shaped by three things: the suburban railway running east to west, the large Ambattur Lake and the industrial estate filling a big block of land. Residential streets fill the space between them in a close, practical grid.
The Ambattur Industrial Estate was set up to support small and medium manufacturers and grew into one of the largest estates of its kind in Asia. On the map, it shows up as long, regular plots and service roads, very different from the finer lanes of the older settlements around it. Many engineering and garment units have operated here.
