Tambaram lies on the southwestern edge of Chennai, where the city meets the older towns and villages along the Grand Southern Trunk Road. From above, it is organised around two long lines running roughly north to south: the suburban railway, with one of the region's major junctions, and GST Road, the main highway to the south. Dense neighbourhoods spread out on both sides.
A large part of the area is taken up by open land. Air Force Station Tambaram occupies a wide area with its runway and grounds. Madras Christian College has a very large campus with a protected scrub forest, a rare area of greenery in the suburbs. Several lakes and water tanks lie around the edges, some partially surrounded by new housing.
A Tambaram map poster shows how these large open areas break up the dense street network.
