Tiruvottiyūr lies on the northern edge of Chennai, along the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Its map is long and narrow: the shoreline runs down one side, while a main road and the suburban railway line run parallel to it inland. Between them, dense residential streets fill a tight grid of small blocks.
The coastline is straight and open, contrasting with the intricate pattern of streets behind it. To the north the land continues towards the port and industrial areas of Ennore, while to the south it merges with the older neighbourhoods of north Chennai.
