Athens grew on the hills above the North Oconee River in northeast Georgia, and the University of Georgia has shaped it since the town's earliest years. The downtown grid sits right next to North Campus, so from above the two read as one: rectangular blocks along Broad Street on one side, and the university's quads, lawns and curving drives on the other.
The Arch on Broad Street marks the traditional entrance to campus, and Sanford Stadium sits in a valley to the south, its bowl clearly visible on the map. Athens also holds an outsized place in music history. R.E.M. and The B-52's both formed here, and the downtown clubs remain part of the city's identity.
Around the centre, the Athens Perimeter, known as Loop 10, circles the city, with neighbourhoods, wooded creeks and the State Botanical Garden beyond it. Loop 10 perimeter
The ring road circles the city at a distance and forms a clear frame around downtown, the campus and the older neighbourhoods. It gives the poster a strong, almost diagrammatic structure.
