Atlanta began as a railroad terminus rather than a river port, and the map still shows it. Instead of one tidy grid, several grids meet at odd angles where rail lines once converged downtown, and Peachtree Street follows a ridge north through Midtown and Buckhead. The Downtown Connector carries two interstates through the middle, and Interstate 285, the Perimeter, loops around the metropolitan core.

The Perimeter
Interstate 285 forms a wide loop around the city's core. Locals describe places as inside or outside the Perimeter, and on a wider framing the ring becomes a strong frame of its own.
