Chalinze lies in Pwani Region, inland from Dar es Salaam, at one of the most important road junctions in Tanzania. Here the highway from the coast splits. One branch continues west toward Morogoro and the interior, and the other turns north toward Tanga and the Kilimanjaro region. The town has grown around that fork, and the map makes the reason for its existence plain.
Near the junction, the streets are dense with shops, lodges and transport services, while side roads branch off into looser residential areas. Further out, the pattern dissolves into farm plots, bush and tracks across the low, open country. There is no old grid here. The town has taken shape along the roads that carry traffic through it.
