Cullman lies in north Alabama, midway between Birmingham and Huntsville, on a plateau above the Tennessee Valley. From above, its origins as a planned railroad town are still easy to see. A regular downtown grid lines the tracks, residential streets extend in straight blocks, and newer development spreads toward Interstate 65 on the west side of the city.
The city was founded in the 1870s by a German immigrant, John G. Cullmann, who brought settlers from Germany to the area. That heritage is still celebrated, including with an annual Oktoberfest. Nearby, St. Bernard Abbey is home to the Ave Maria Grotto, a hillside garden of miniature replicas of famous buildings made by a Benedictine monk.

Railroad line
The tracks run straight through the middle of town and set the direction of the downtown streets. They give the whole map its main axis.
