Cyato is in Rwanda's Western Province, in the high, steep country between Lake Kivu and the Nyungwe forest. On a map, the landscape is the main story. Ridges and valleys lie close together, and every road has to curve around them. Houses and small fields cover the slopes in a dense, fine-grained pattern.
Rwanda is often called the land of a thousand hills, and this area shows why. There is very little flat ground. Tracks wind along ridge tops, and streams run in the valleys. Farming covers much of the land, with terraces and field edges following the contours. The settlement spreads along ridges instead of forming a single compact centre.
