Jinfeng lies in Jiangxi Province, southeast of the provincial capital, Nanchang, in low and well-watered country. Like many towns in this part of China, it combines an older core of closely packed streets with newer districts laid out in wide, regular blocks. From above, the contrast between the two is one of the first things you notice.
Water shapes the countryside around the town. Rice paddies, fish ponds and small reservoirs lie between low wooded hills, and the rivers of this region drain north into the Poyang Lake basin, home to China's largest freshwater lake.
