Karengera lies in Rwanda's Western Province, in the steep, green hill country that rises above the shores of Lake Kivu. From above, the landscape is a mosaic of ridges and valleys. Roads follow the contours in long curves, and settlements line the crests and slopes. Small fields and plantations cover much of the land between the houses.
