The surrounding land is savanna, broad and open, and from above the town appears as a moderate cluster of streets and compounds within a wide landscape. Roads and tracks lead outward in several directions, connecting Mandiana with villages and neighbouring towns.
The town serves as the administrative centre of its prefecture, and its core holds the main civic buildings and market.
