Mesagne lies in the province of Brindisi in Apulia, on the level land at the northern edge of the Salento peninsula. Its layout is clear from above: a compact, roughly oval historic centre of narrow, twisting streets, enclosed by a ring road that follows the line of the old walls, with later districts spreading outward in straighter blocks.
The town's roots go back to antiquity, and it is often linked to the Messapian settlements that preceded Roman rule in this part of Italy. At its heart stands a Norman-Swabian castle, which today holds exhibitions and cultural events. Beyond the edge of town the landscape turns to olive groves and vineyards, divided into small plots by country lanes and dry-stone walls.
