Nakodar lies in Jalandhar district, in the Doaba, the fertile land between the Beas and Sutlej rivers in Indian Punjab. The ground is flat and intensively farmed, so the map shows a dense town surrounded by a finely divided grid of fields, canals and village roads. The older centre has narrow, irregular lanes, while newer colonies spread out along the main roads.
The town is known for two seventeenth-century Mughal tombs, often called the tombs of the Ustad and the Shagird, the teacher and the pupil, decorated with glazed tilework. Like much of Doaba, Nakodar also has strong ties to the Punjabi diaspora, and many local families have relatives in Britain, Canada and elsewhere.
