Orosháza sits in Békés County on the flat, open land of the Great Hungarian Plain, where almost nothing interrupts the horizon. From above, the town is a dense core of streets that thin out in every direction into long rows of houses and then into large, rectangular fields. With no hills or major river to work around, the layout comes down almost entirely to roads, rail and property lines.
The town grew as an agricultural centre, and it is also known in Hungary for glassmaking and for Gyopárosfürdő, the spa and lake resort on its edge. On a map the resort is a separate small cluster by the water, linked to the town by road. The spa district of Gyopárosfürdő forms its own small cluster around a lake at the edge of town, a soft open shape next to the regular blocks of the centre.
