Sironj is a town in Vidisha district, Madhya Pradesh, on the northern edge of the Malwa plateau. It has a long history as a trading stop on routes across central India, and for much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it was a detached part of the princely state of Tonk, governed from Rajputana far away.
On the map, the old town shows the marks of that age: a compact and irregular network of lanes and small blocks, with open spaces left by older structures and water tanks. Newer neighbourhoods and roads extend outward, and the surrounding plateau is divided into farmland, with low rises and seasonal streams.
