The map

About this Ocho Rios map poster

Ocho Rios lies on the north coast of Jamaica in Saint Ann Parish, a town shaped by a shallow bay, a reef-sheltered shoreline and steep green hills behind it. On a map the town is a narrow band along the coast: the main road following the water, hotels and beaches on one side, and a small grid of streets climbing inland on the other.

Despite the name, Ocho Rios does not come from eight rivers. It is usually traced to the Spanish Las Chorreras, meaning the waterfalls, and the best known of them is Dunn's River Falls, just west of town, where water tumbles over limestone terraces straight to the sea. The cruise pier reaches out into the bay, one of the clearest man-made shapes on the coastline.

An Ocho Rios map poster is a study in the meeting of coast and hill. The curve of the bay, the jutting pier, the coastal highway and the roads twisting south through Fern Gully all draw a picture of a place defined by water and slope, one that visitors and Jamaicans alike will recognise immediately.

01

The bay

The town curves around a sheltered bay with beaches and a reef-protected shoreline, the dominant shape on the map and the reason the resort grew here.

02

Cruise pier

A long pier juts into the bay to receive cruise ships, drawing a straight, deliberate line across the soft curve of the coast.

03

Fern Gully road

The road south from town winds through Fern Gully, a shaded former riverbed, and its loops trace the steep terrain climbing away from the sea.

A map that means something
