The map
Okara lies in the heart of Punjab, on the fertile plain between the Ravi and Sutlej rivers, south-west of Lahore. The land is almost completely flat, and on a map this shows in the directness of everything drawn on it: long straight roads, a railway line running across the landscape, and irrigation channels that divide the surrounding countryside into regular fields.
The city grew up around its railway station and market, and the centre has the dense, tightly packed streets typical of Punjabi towns. Outward from there, newer housing schemes are laid out in more open, orderly blocks. The edges of the city blur into agricultural land, where the pattern of fields and canals continues well beyond the built-up area.
Okara is the headquarters of its district and a centre for agriculture, known for cotton, wheat and livestock farming. An Okara map poster records a city shaped by farming and transport rather than by hills or coastline, where the appeal lies in the order of its lines and the quiet regularity of the plain around it.
The main line between Lahore and Multan passes through Okara, a straight stroke that anchors the city and around which much of its older street pattern developed.
Canals and smaller distributaries cross the surrounding plain in straight runs, dividing farmland into orderly sections and giving the edges of the map a fine geometric texture.
Around the bazaar and station, narrow streets pack closely together, forming a darker, finer area on the map in contrast to the more open newer neighbourhoods.
