The map
Ōuda is a district of Uda city in the highlands of eastern Nara Prefecture. The area is known above all for the Matsuyama historic townscape, a preserved street of traditional merchant houses that grew up below a castle hill. It is also home to the Morino medicinal herb garden, often described as the oldest private herb garden in Japan. Yamaguchi is one of the neighbourhoods within this rural district.
On the map, the valley floor decides the shape of everything. Roads and houses follow the Uda River and its side streams, and the built-up land is narrow and linear. Wooded hills press close on both sides. Terraced paddies and small settlements branch into side valleys, giving the drawing a pattern of thin lines reaching into large areas of empty paper.
An Ōuda-yamaguchi map poster suits the restrained style of the prints. There is no grid or dense centre, only a river valley, a few roads and small clusters of houses scattered among the hills. The result feels close to a traditional landscape drawing: spare, balanced and clearly shaped by the land.
The preserved merchant street of Ōuda runs along the valley below the old castle hill, forming a tight, linear strip of buildings on the map.
The river and the roads beside it set the main axis of the district. Nearly every settlement lines up along the water or along one of its tributaries.
Steep wooded slopes fill much of the map area, leaving wide open space around the narrow valleys and giving the composition its quiet balance.
