The map
Paarl stretches along the Berg River valley at the foot of Paarl Mountain, and that alignment shapes its map. The historic Main Street runs for several kilometres along the mountain's lower slopes, lined with old houses and churches. Newer suburbs fill the flat ground toward the river, and vineyards cover the land beyond.
The town takes its name from the great granite domes on the mountain above it, which early settlers likened to a pearl shining after rain. The Afrikaans Language Monument stands on the mountainside. Just outside town is the former Victor Verster prison, from which Nelson Mandela walked free in 1990.
A Paarl map poster captures a town drawn out in one direction, with the mountain as a blank mass on one side and the river winding along the other. It is a fitting piece for anyone who grew up in the Winelands, studied or worked there, or loves the way valley towns in the Western Cape sit against their mountains.
The historic main road runs long and nearly straight along the base of the mountain. It forms the spine of the old town, with side streets branching down toward the valley.
The granite domes rise immediately west of the town. On the map they appear as a large area without roads, a quiet counterweight to the built-up streets below.
The river flows north through the valley on the eastern side of town. Green banks mark its course, and bridges link the older centre to the suburbs beyond.
