The map

About this Pandharpur map poster

Pandharpur lies in Solapur district of Maharashtra, on the banks of the Bhima river, which is known locally as the Chandrabhaga because of the crescent-shaped curve it makes here. From above, the river bends around the old town, with stepped ghats lining the water. Narrow lanes lead inland from the ghats to the temple at the centre.

The Vithoba temple, dedicated to the deity Vithoba or Vitthal, is one of Maharashtra's most important pilgrimage sites. Every year, the Wari brings hundreds of thousands of pilgrims on foot from across the state, with the main gathering around Ashadhi Ekadashi. During these weeks, the town fills far beyond its usual population.

A Pandharpur map poster captures a town shaped around a river and a temple. The tight lanes of the old centre, the ghats and the curve of the Chandrabhaga all show clearly in black and white. It is a meaningful piece for Varkari families and anyone who has walked the Wari.

01

Chandrabhaga bend

The Bhima curves around the town in the crescent that gives it the name Chandrabhaga. This curve is the defining line of the poster.

02

Riverside ghats

Steps and landings line the riverbank, where pilgrims bathe. On the map, they show as a busy, detailed edge where the town meets the water.

03

Temple lanes

A dense network of narrow lanes leads from the river to the Vithoba temple. The old centre is fine-grained and crowded, a clear contrast with the more open outskirts.

Why Pandharpur

A map that means something

Many families in Maharashtra have walked to Pandharpur for generations, and a map of the town can be a devotional object as well as a decoration. It shows the route to the temple and the river in a quiet, simple form.

The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be edited, so the poster can include a name, a Wari year or words in Marathi. It comes in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
