The map

About this Pangkalanbuun map poster

Pangkalan Bun is the main town of West Kotawaringin Regency in Central Kalimantan, on the southern side of Borneo. It lies along the Arut River, and on the map the water sets the direction of everything. The older town lines the banks, while newer districts and roads extend over the drier ground behind them.

Beyond the town, the map opens into a flat, low landscape of rivers, oil palm plantations, forest and peat swamps, crossed by a few long roads. Tributaries and old river channels weave through the land in thin, curving lines, and the coast of the Java Sea lies to the south.

Pangkalan Bun is best known as the gateway to Tanjung Puting National Park, where river boats head upstream to orangutan research and rehabilitation camps such as Camp Leakey. A Pangkalanbuun map poster shows the town at the start of that journey, a small grid of streets surrounded by water and forest.
