The map

About this Panjakent map poster

Panjakent lies in the Zeravshan valley in north-western Tajikistan, close to the border with Uzbekistan and about sixty kilometres east of Samarkand. The river runs west along the valley floor. The town spreads beside it, with orchards and irrigated fields filling the flat land, while mountain ridges rise to the north and south.

On a terrace just outside the modern town lie the ruins of ancient Panjakent, a Sogdian city that flourished before the Arab conquest of the eighth century and is known for its wall paintings. The poet Rudaki, regarded as a founder of Persian literature, was born in the area. The Fann Mountains and their lakes lie to the south.

A Panjakent map poster shows a valley town shaped by water and slope. The Zeravshan and its irrigation channels draw long lines across the map, and the streets follow the gentle rise of the terrain. The contrast between the fertile valley and the steep, empty land around it gives the composition real depth.

01

Zeravshan River

The river runs through the valley below the town. Its wide course and green banks form the main natural axis of the map and lead the eye across the frame.

02

Ancient Panjakent

The excavated Sogdian city on the edge of town appears as a distinct area of ruins and paths, a reminder of the settlement's long history on this valley terrace.

03

Mountain frame

Ridges rise to the north and south, where the road network gives way to steep ground, so the town and valley read as a narrow, fertile band on the poster.
