The map
Pánuco lies in the far north of Veracruz, near the border with Tamaulipas, on the river that shares its name. From above, the town is shaped by the Pánuco River, which moves through the lowlands in broad loops, with wetlands and lagoons nearby.
The Pánuco region was one of the earliest areas on the Gulf side of Mexico to be settled by the Spanish in the sixteenth century, and it lies within the Huasteca, the historic homeland of the Huastec people. In the early twentieth century, the surrounding area became known for its oil fields.
A Pánuco map poster shows a compact town with a regular grid of streets at its centre, set against a landscape of river channels and open land. The water gives the map most of its movement, curving around the town and dividing the countryside.
The wide river curves past the town in large meanders, the dominant natural line on the map and the reason the settlement is here.
Streets at the centre follow a steady rectangular pattern, a clear block of order next to the winding water.
Lagoons and wetlands spread across the flat country nearby, adding irregular shapes and open space around the town.
