About this Paxtakor Shahri map poster

Paxtakor Shahri is a town in the Jizzakh Region of Uzbekistan, on the Mirzachul, or Hungry Steppe, a once-arid plain turned to agriculture through large irrigation projects. Its name refers to cotton growing. From above, the town has a planned, geometric layout, with straight streets and regular blocks set within a larger grid of fields.

Canals and irrigation channels cross the surrounding land in long straight lines, dividing it into rectangular plots. A Paxtakor Shahri map poster shows how closely the town fits into this agricultural system, with streets aligned to the same geometry and the edges fading into fields.

The Hungry Steppe was transformed during the Soviet period, when extensive irrigation allowed cotton to be grown on a large scale. Towns like Paxtakor were built to serve these farms, and their maps still reflect that planned, orderly origin.
