The map

About this Phuthaditjhaba map poster

Phuthaditjhaba lies in the eastern Free State, at the foot of the Maluti mountains near the borders with Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal. Its name is usually translated as 'meeting place of the tribes'. From above, the town spreads across a broad valley in a series of planned residential sections, with curving streets and small plots set against the steep sandstone slopes rising behind it.

The town was established as the capital of QwaQwa, a former homeland created under apartheid, and it remains the main centre of the area. Its layout reflects that history, with separate suburbs, commercial strips and government buildings connected by a handful of main roads. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park and the Drakensberg Amphitheatre are both within a short drive.

A Phuthaditjhaba map poster shows a dense, spreading town held within dramatic terrain. In black and white, the sweep of residential streets meets the blank space of the mountains, and roads run along the valleys toward Harrismith and the national park. It is a map that speaks of community and landscape together.

Residential sections

Planned neighbourhoods fill the valley in repeating patterns of curving streets and small plots, giving the town a distinctive layered texture across the map.

02

Mountain edge

Steep slopes of the Maluti and Drakensberg rise close to the town, leaving large open areas on the map where the built-up area stops abruptly at the foot of the hills.

03

Main road corridors

A few main roads link the town's sections and lead out toward Harrismith and the Golden Gate area, forming the structure that holds the spread-out town together.
