The map

About this Puerto Padre map poster

Puerto Padre lies on the northern coast of Las Tunas province, on the shore of a large bay that connects to the Atlantic through a narrow channel. On the map the town sits on the edge of that sheltered water, with a grid of streets running back from the shore.

The bay is the defining shape here. Its outline is broad and irregular, with inlets and low shores, and the town occupies only a small section of it. The seafront has a malecón, and the streets behind it follow a simple colonial grid.

The town grew as a sugar port, shipping the output of the surrounding cane fields and mills. It is also known for the windmills that once pumped water across town, which gave it the nickname Villa Azul de los Molinos. A Puerto Padre map poster shows the town at the edge of its large, quiet bay.

01

Sheltered bay

A large bay with a narrow channel to the sea surrounds the town, filling much of the poster with open water and a long irregular shoreline.

02

Seafront malecón

The waterfront promenade follows the shore in a single line, with the town's grid lined up behind it.

03

Colonial grid

The streets form a small, regular grid of blocks running inland from the water, a compact pattern typical of Cuban towns.
