The map
Puttalam sits at the head of Puttalam Lagoon, a large, shallow body of water separated from the Indian Ocean by the narrow Kalpitiya peninsula. On a map the town clings to the lagoon's eastern shore, and its streets thin out quickly into palm groves and open ground. The water takes up much of the view and gives the town a clear, defined edge.
The town is known for salt. Evaporation pans spread along the lagoon margins in neat rectangular grids, one of the most distinctive features of the local landscape when seen from above. Fishing also runs through the town's life, and the shoreline is marked by small landing places and inlets.
A Puttalam map poster balances the compact grid of the town against the broad, smooth space of the lagoon. To the north lies Wilpattu, Sri Lanka's largest national park, and the main roads leave town in long straight lines toward the coast, Colombo and the interior.

Rectangular evaporation pans line the lagoon edges, forming a precise grid that is one of the most graphic elements of the Puttalam landscape in black and white.
Main roads run out of town along the coast and inland, long and straight across the flat terrain, tying Puttalam to the rest of the western province.
