The map

About this Qaşr-e Shīrīn map poster

Qaşr-e Shīrīn lies in Kermanshah Province, close to the border with Iraq, where the Zagros foothills give way to the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The Alvand River flows through the town, and on a map the streets follow the river valley, with the town spreading along both banks and the roads leading toward the border.

The town takes its name from Shirin, the wife of the Sassanid king Khosrow II. The ruins of Sassanid palace complexes associated with them lie on the edge of town, and the area was a stop on old routes between the Iranian plateau and Mesopotamia. The town was badly damaged in the Iran–Iraq War and later rebuilt.

A Qaşr-e Shīrīn map poster combines a river town with the outlines of ancient sites and the routes that pass through them. The Alvand gives the map a natural axis, and the surrounding dry hills leave generous white space. It is a small city with a very long story, told simply.
