The map

About this Qiaotou map poster

Qiaotou is the seat of Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County, north of Xining in Qinghai province. It sits at well over two thousand metres above sea level, in a valley cut into the north-eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. From above, the setting shapes everything. The town stretches along the valley floor, and steep, mostly bare slopes rise on both sides.

The main streets follow the line of the river and the valley road. Cross streets are short, because the ground rises quickly beyond them. The county has a large Hui and Tu population, and its mosques and temples sit among ordinary housing blocks, schools and small factories. The name Qiaotou means bridgehead, a reminder of how important the river crossings are here.

A Qiaotou map poster shows a long, narrow town tightly held by its terrain, a very different shape from the broad grids of lowland China. In black and white, the valley walls read as empty space pressing in from both sides, and the town becomes a strip of fine lines between them.

01

Valley floor

The built-up area runs in a long strip along the river, with streets packed into the flat ground between the steep slopes on each side.

02

River crossings

Several bridges link the two banks, fitting a town whose name means bridgehead and whose layout depends on crossing the water.

03

Plateau edge

Around the town, the land rises quickly into high, dry ridges, so the map shows a narrow urban strip surrounded by wide open space.

Why Qiaotou

A map that means something

Qiaotou is a place people from Datong often leave for Xining or further afield, and its narrow valley shape is easy to recognise on a wall. The map makes a quiet, meaningful reminder of home or of a journey across Qinghai.
