The map

About this Quisqueya map poster

Quisqueya is a municipality in the province of San Pedro de Macorís, on the flat coastal plain of the eastern Dominican Republic. From above, the town forms a compact grid of streets around its centre, with houses thinning out quickly into agricultural land on every side.

The surrounding plain has long been sugarcane country, and on a map the fields appear as broad, regular expanses crossed by rural roads and tracks. The town's name is itself a piece of history: Quisqueya is one of the names given to the island of Hispaniola by its Taíno inhabitants, and it is still used poetically for the whole country.

A Quisqueya map poster shows a small town and its setting: the dense streets at the centre, the roads leading to San Pedro de Macorís and nearby communities, and the wide agricultural plain around them. It is a calm, honest view of the eastern Dominican countryside.

Town grid

The centre of Quisqueya is laid out in a compact grid of streets. It forms a tight, well-defined cluster in the middle of the map.

02

Cane fields

Large, flat fields surround the town, a reminder of the sugar industry that has shaped this region for generations, and they give the poster a calm, open setting.

03

Rural roads

Roads and tracks lead out across the plain towards neighbouring towns and farms, forming thin lines that connect the town to its surroundings.

Why Quisqueya

A map that means something

The poster has particular meaning for people from Quisqueya and for Dominicans abroad, since the town shares its name with a word used for the whole island. It connects a specific street plan to a much larger sense of home.

The title, subtitle and coordinates can all be personalised, in Spanish if you prefer, and there are five styles to choose from. HD files cost $9, and printed posters come on matte paper with an optional frame.
