The map

About this Qŭnghirot map poster

Qŭnghirot, also written Kungrad, lies in the northwest of Uzbekistan in the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan. It sits at the western side of the Amu Darya delta, where irrigated land meets the dry Ustyurt plateau. On a map, the town is a compact grid of wide streets, typical of Soviet-era planning.

The railway is its main feature. The line through Qŭnghirot continues northwest across the Ustyurt toward Beyneu in Kazakhstan, making the town an important junction for trade between Central Asia and the Caspian region. Tracks and sidings form long lines along one side of the town.

North of Qŭnghirot is the area once covered by the Aral Sea, which has shrunk dramatically since the 1960s. A Qŭnghirot map poster shows the town in that setting: a planned grid, irrigation channels in the delta and open desert beyond, a quiet record of a changing region.
