About this Rasht map poster
Rasht lies on the humid lowland of Gilan, a short distance inland from the Caspian coast, and the map shows a city spreading across flat, well-watered ground. Two small rivers, the Goharrud and the Zarjub, run roughly north through the urban area. Around the edges, the built-up blocks give way to the rice fields and wet lowland that define this corner of northern Iran.
As the capital of Gilan Province, Rasht has long been a trading town between Iran and the Caspian world. In 2015 it joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for gastronomy, a nod to Gilani cooking with its herbs, fish and rice. The city is also known for its frequent rain, which feeds the dense greenery around it.
