The map

About this Ratnapura map poster

Ratnapura lies in the southwest of Sri Lanka, in the valley of the Kalu Ganga. The town is built on low ground near the river, with streets curving to follow its course. Steep, forested hills rise on every side. To the northeast, the land climbs towards Sri Pada, or Adam's Peak, one of the island's most important pilgrimage mountains.

The name Ratnapura means city of gems. For centuries, the area has been known for its sapphires, rubies and other precious stones, which are dug from pits in the river gravels. The town's markets are still full of gem dealers. Ratnapura is also the capital of Sabaragamuwa Province, and one of the traditional routes to Adam's Peak starts nearby.

The Ratnapura map poster is shaped by water and hills. The river winds through the town, the streets gather on the flat land near its banks, and roads climb away into the hills in twisting lines. It's an organic, flowing composition that contrasts well with maps of grid-planned cities.

01

Kalu Ganga

The river winds through the valley next to the town centre. It creates a strong, curving line through the poster and explains where the town grew.

02

Valley-floor centre

Streets and markets are packed onto the flat ground near the river. They form a dense cluster that contrasts with the empty hills around it.

03

Hill roads

Roads leave the valley in sharp curves as they climb into the surrounding hills. They add movement and texture to the edges of the print.

Why Ratnapura

A map that means something

Ratnapura is where people go for gems, for the pilgrimage to Adam's Peak and for family roots in Sabaragamuwa. This map keeps the shape of that green river valley close.

You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the date of a pilgrimage or a family name. Then choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
