Loch Lomond has one of the most distinctive outlines in Scotland. Its southern basin is wide and dotted with wooded islands, while the northern half pinches into a narrow, fjord-like strip running between steep hills. By surface area it is the largest lake in Great Britain, and on a map the contrast between its two halves is immediately readable.
The loch lies within Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Ben Lomond rises on the eastern shore, and the West Highland Way follows that side of the water for much of its length. The western shore carries a main road and a railway line, so one bank reads as busy linework and the other as open hillside.
