Ulva lies off the west coast of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, divided from it by a narrow sound that a small passenger ferry crosses in minutes. The island is hilly and largely open, with basalt terraces, moorland and patches of woodland, and a coastline of rocky shores and small bays. Tracks rather than roads cross it, so the map is drawn mostly by landform and shore.
To the west, Ulva is joined by a bridge to its smaller neighbour Gometra, and together the two form a long chain of land pointing toward the Atlantic. The island had a much larger population before the clearances of the nineteenth century. In 2018 it passed into community ownership after a buyout by the North West Mull Community Woodland Company.

A small bridge links Ulva to Gometra at its western end, extending the island's outline into a longer chain facing the open Atlantic.
Basalt terraces
Stepped layers of volcanic rock shape much of the island's slopes and coast, giving the land a terraced quality that echoes neighbouring Mull.
