Rùm Map Poster
Rùm is the largest of the Small Isles, south of Skye in the Inner Hebrides. It is roughly diamond-shaped and almost entirely wild, dominated by the Rùm Cuillin, a cluster of steep, rocky peaks in the south. From above there is very little to draw beyond the coastline, a few tracks and the long inlet of Loch Scresort on the east side.
Most of the island is a National Nature Reserve and has served for decades as an outdoor laboratory for ecological research, including long-running studies of red deer. Rùm is also where white-tailed eagles were reintroduced to Britain from 1975. Its mountain slopes hold a very large breeding colony of Manx shearwaters, which nest in burrows high on the peaks.
Kinloch, the only village, sits at the head of Loch Scresort beside Kinloch Castle, a turn-of-the-century mansion built for a Lancashire textile family. This sea loch cuts into the east coast and shelters the ferry slipway and Kinloch. It is the single point of arrival and the only settled corner of Rùm.
Tracks to Kilmory and Harris
Two long rough tracks cross from Kinloch to the far coasts. These thin lines are among the few man-made marks on the island's interior.
