Rutshuru lies in the North Kivu province of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, north of Goma. It sits in high, fertile country shaped by the volcanoes of the Virunga range, and from above the town appears as a network of roads and paths spreading across farmland rather than a dense urban grid.
The town takes its name from the Rutshuru River, which flows north through the area toward Lake Edward. Rutshuru also lies close to Virunga National Park, the oldest national park in Africa, known for its volcanoes and mountain gorillas. The main road north from Goma passes through the area, linking it with the rest of the province.
