The map

About this Šabac map poster

Šabac stands on the southern bank of the Sava in western Serbia, at the edge of the fertile Mačva plain. From above, the river dominates the northern side of the map with wide meanders, oxbows and wetlands. The town spreads south from the water in a compact centre, with streets running out toward villages and fields laid out in long, narrow strips.

The ruins of a fortress built by the Ottomans in the fifteenth century stand by the Sava, a reminder of the town's position on a historic frontier. In August 1914 the nearby Battle of Cer became the first Allied victory of the First World War, and Šabac was badly damaged during the fighting. The town was later rebuilt around its main street and squares.

A Šabac map poster shows how closely the town is tied to its river: the curving bank, the bridge toward Srem on the far side, and the dense centre giving way to the regular geometry of Mačva's farmland. It is a quiet, horizontal composition with a lot of water and open land.

01

Sava meanders

The Sava curves widely along the town's northern edge, with side channels and old riverbeds that add soft, flowing shapes to the map.

02

Fortress by the river

The remains of the old fortress sit on the riverbank near the town, marking the spot from which Šabac grew as a defended crossing point.

03

Mačva field pattern

South and west of the town, fields form long parallel strips between village roads, a pattern typical of the plain that frames the urban core.
