Saint-Fons lies immediately south of Lyon, on the eastern side of the Rhône. The map is shaped by infrastructure. Along the river are industrial sites, rail yards and a motorway corridor, and to the east are residential neighbourhoods that climb gently away from the valley, with blocks of housing and small streets.
The town is at the heart of what the Lyon area calls the Vallée de la chimie, the chemical valley, a long strip of chemical and industrial plants that runs along the Rhône south of the city. That history of industry and the workers who came for it shaped Saint-Fons, which is now part of the Lyon metropolis.
