The map

About this Saint John’s map poster

Saint John’s lies at the head of a deep, sheltered harbour on the northwest coast of Antigua. On the map, the harbour cuts inland like a long funnel, and the town spreads over the land around its eastern end. The streets form a fairly regular grid that starts at the waterfront and rises gently inland, then gives way to looser suburban roads and open land.

Along the waterfront, the cruise piers of Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay project into the harbour, adding sharp straight lines to the shore. At the top of the grid, St John’s Cathedral and its two towers stand on higher ground, visible across town. Near the harbour mouth, Fort James guards the entrance from a small point, and beaches curve along the coast beyond.

Saint John’s is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda and its main port. The Antigua Recreation Ground, a historic cricket venue in the town, has hosted many Test matches. A Saint John’s map poster traces this compact harbour town with care: the funnel of water, the tidy streets and the headlands that frame the approach from the sea.

The harbour

A long, sheltered inlet reaching deep into the land. It is drawn as a large open shape that frames the town and dominates the western side of the poster.

02

Cruise quays

Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay add straight piers and jetties to the waterfront, where the regular street grid meets the water.

03

Fort James point

A small headland at the harbour mouth and the site of an eighteenth-century fort. It marks the entrance where the inlet opens to the sea.
