The map

About this Saint-Joseph map poster

Saint-Joseph lies on the southern coast of Réunion, the French island in the Indian Ocean. This part of the island is known locally as the Sud Sauvage, the wild south. The town is spread along a stretch of dark, rocky shoreline, and behind it the land rises steeply towards the massif of the Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active volcanoes.

Rivers shape the map as much as the coast does. The Rivière des Remparts and the Langevin cut deep ravines from the mountains down to the sea, dividing the commune into separate districts. Roads follow the coast and then climb in switchbacks up the slopes to hamlets among sugar cane fields. There is very little flat land, and the street pattern shows it.

A Saint-Joseph map poster captures that dramatic combination: the curving coastline, the parallel ravines and roads zigzagging uphill. The ocean fills one side of the print with open space, balancing the fine detail of the slopes. It is a fitting keepsake for Réunionnais families from the south, and for visitors who explored the volcano and the ravines.

01

Southern coastline

The rocky shore runs along the ocean side of the map. It forms a strong, irregular edge, and the open sea gives the poster a calm, spacious half.

02

River ravines

Deep valleys, including those of the Rivière des Remparts and the Langevin, cut from the mountains to the sea. On paper they divide the town into clear sections.

03

Switchback roads

Roads leave the coast and climb the slopes in tight zigzags. Their fine, winding lines show how steeply the ground rises towards the volcano.

Why Saint-Joseph

A map that means something

Saint-Joseph is a map for families from the wild south and for travellers who remember its coast and gorges. The coastline and ravines make it one of the more dramatic small-town posters, even for people who have never visited.

Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps in French or Creole, and choose from five styles; Noir suits the dark volcanic shore. Buy the HD files for $9, or order a printed poster from a local partner.
