The map

About this Saint-Louis map poster

Saint-Louis lies on the southwest coast of Réunion, the French island in the Indian Ocean. On a map the commune is a long strip. It starts at the coast, where the main town and its streets sit on a gentle plain, and climbs inland across cane fields and ravines towards the mountains. Roads follow the slope, and settlements are scattered along them at higher altitudes.

Sugar cane has shaped the area for a long time, and the Le Gol sugar refinery remains an important landmark. Near the coast, the wetland of the Étang du Gol adds an unusual open shape to the map. The Rivière Saint-Étienne, one of the island's large rivers, marks the landscape with its wide, stony bed as it reaches the sea.

A Saint-Louis map poster captures the typical form of a Réunion commune: town by the sea, fields on the lower slopes, and ravines running down from the heights. In black and white, the curving roads and deep gullies create a sense of relief even without contour lines. The coastline gives the composition a firm lower edge.

01

Étang du Gol

This coastal wetland near the town forms a quiet open area on the map, between the urban streets and the edge of the ocean.

02

Rivière Saint-Étienne

The wide river bed reaches the coast near the commune's edge. On the poster it reads as a broad band cutting through the land.

03

Slope roads

Roads wind uphill from the coast through cane fields and ravines. Their looping lines suggest the steep volcanic terrain inland.
