The map
Salzburg forms around the Salzach River, which curves through the city from south to north. On the left bank, the old town fits into a narrow strip between the water and the Mönchsberg, a steep, wooded ridge. Above it stands the Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest medieval castles in Central Europe. Opposite, the Kapuzinerberg rises just as steeply from the right bank.
Between these hills, the historic centre is a dense pattern of lanes, squares and cathedral courtyards, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mozart was born on Getreidegasse in 1756. Each summer the Salzburg Festival fills the halls cut into the base of the Mönchsberg.
On a Salzburg map poster, the constraints of the terrain are obvious: blank hill shapes press against tightly packed streets, and several footbridges and road bridges cross the river. Across the Salzach, the formal Mirabell Gardens add a geometric note to the right bank.
The river curves through the city centre, with the old town on one bank and the Mirabell quarter on the other, joined by a series of bridges.
The Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg appear as solid wooded shapes that hem in the old town from both sides.
Tightly packed lanes, cathedral squares and courtyards make one of the finest-grained street patterns in the Alps.
