About this Sandakan map poster
Sandakan stretches along the northern shore of Sandakan Bay, a deep inlet that opens onto the Sulu Sea. On a map the town is long and thin. Its dense commercial centre is squeezed onto a strip of flat land at the water's edge, and steep, green hills rise almost immediately behind it, with roads winding up their slopes.
The old town centre has a tight grid of shophouse blocks facing the harbour, with jetties and fish-market piers reaching into the bay. Past the centre, development follows the coast and the valley roads inland, so the urban area looks like a string of neighbourhoods rather than one compact mass. Water villages built on stilts line parts of the shore.
Sandakan was the capital of British North Borneo until after the Second World War, when the administration moved to what is now Kota Kinabalu. The Sandakan Death Marches of 1945 are remembered at the memorial park on the town's outskirts.
