About this Sanmenxia map poster
Sanmenxia lies in western Henan, on the southern bank of the Yellow River where it runs between Shanxi and Henan. The city takes its name from the Three Gate Gorge, where the river once squeezed through rock channels. In the 1950s the Sanmenxia Dam was built here, the first large dam on the Yellow River. The reservoir behind it widens the river into a broad band of water on the map.
The urban area is long and narrow. It follows the riverbank and climbs onto the loess tableland that rises above it. Main roads run parallel to the water, and short streets step up the slopes between them. Gullies cut into the soft yellow soil and break the grid into separate terraces.
Every winter large flocks of whooper swans gather on the wetlands along the river, which has given Sanmenxia the nickname Swan City. A Sanmenxia map poster shows a city shaped by the river and by one of the defining engineering projects of modern China.
