The map
Sanzhi lies on the northern coast of Taiwan, in New Taipei, between the Datun volcanic hills and the East China Sea. On a map, the district is mostly open land. Hills and valleys cover the south, and a narrow coastal strip holds most of the roads and settlements. Small streams run down from the mountains to the shore, and the coast road follows the curving waterline.
The built-up areas are small and scattered: a modest town centre, fishing ports and villages along the coast, and farmhouses up in the valleys. Sanzhi is the birthplace of Lee Teng-hui, Taiwan's first directly elected president, and a memorial marks his family's home. The district was also known for its futuristic pod houses, a curiosity of the late twentieth century that has since been demolished.
A Sanzhi map poster is mostly landscape, with a thin thread of settlement along the edge of the land. The coastline makes a long, graceful curve against the open sea, and roads branch inland along the valleys. It is a quiet portrait of rural northern Taiwan, just a short drive from Taipei but very different in character.

The southern part of the district rises toward the volcanic hills of Yangmingshan. It is crossed by only a few winding roads, which leaves wide quiet areas.
Small rivers run from the hills to the coast. Settlements and roads follow them, giving the map a gentle north–south rhythm.
