The map

About this Sapiranga map poster

Sapiranga sits in the Vale do Rio dos Sinos in Rio Grande do Sul, where the plain meets the first steep slopes of the highlands. From above, the town fills the flatter ground with a fairly regular street grid, then stops abruptly where the terrain rises. The high ridge of Morro Ferrabraz sets a clear limit on one side, and the street pattern follows the foot of the hill.

The ridge is known across Brazil as a launch site for hang-gliding and paragliding, and Sapiranga calls itself a national capital of the sport. It also has a darker history: in 1874 the Mucker conflict, a violent clash around a religious community led by Jacobina Maurer, took place in the Ferrabraz area among descendants of German settlers.

A Sapiranga map poster shows a town shaped by the edge of a hill. The grid of the lower town, the roads climbing toward the ridge and the sudden end of the streets make a composition with real direction and weight.

01

Morro Ferrabraz

The ridge rises sharply above the town. On the map it appears as an almost empty area where the streets stop, and it is home to the ramps used by hang-glider pilots.

02

Lower-town grid

On the flatter land the streets form a fairly regular grid of blocks, typical of towns that grew with the footwear and leather industries of the Sinos valley.

03

Hillside roads

A few roads wind up toward the higher ground. Their loose, curving lines contrast with the straight streets below and hint at the slope.
