The map

About this Sennar map poster

Seen from above, Sennar follows the Blue Nile. The river runs past the town's eastern edge, and the streets spread west and south from it in loose, low blocks. Sandbanks and river channels break up the water's outline. Past the last houses the map turns into long straight field boundaries and canals that run across the plain toward the horizon.

The town is closely tied to the Sennar Dam, built across the Blue Nile in the 1920s just upstream of the settlement. On a map the dam shows up as a sharp line across the river. It holds back a broad reach of water behind it and feeds the canals of the Gezira Scheme, one of the largest irrigation projects in Africa. Much of the geometry around Sennar comes from that water system.

The name goes back much further than the dam. From the early sixteenth century until 1821, Sennar was the capital of the Funj Sultanate, which ruled much of the middle Nile valley. That history doesn't show up as monuments on a street plan. A Sennar map poster still captures what has stayed the same: a settlement placed on the river, looking out over open, cultivated land.

01

The Blue Nile

The river is the strongest line on the map. It curves past the town with sandbars and side channels, and it sets the edge that the whole street pattern grows from.

02

Sennar Dam

A straight barrier across the Blue Nile just upstream, completed in the 1920s. It widens the river into a reservoir and marks the point where water is sent into the irrigation canals.

03

Canal-cut plains

Around the town, the land is divided by long, evenly spaced canals and field lines from the Gezira irrigation system. It gives the edges of the poster a quiet, ruled texture.

Why Sennar

A map that means something

Sennar suits people who grew up beside the Blue Nile, worked on the land it waters, or trace their family back to the old Funj capital. The poster is a plain record of the town's shape: the river, the dam, the grid of canals, and the streets between them.

You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a name, a date or a few words that matter to you. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. The HD digital files cost $9, and a free watermarked preview lets you check the design before you buy.
